CISPA-Stanford Center for Cybersecurity funded by BMBF

The Center for IT-Security, Privacy and Accountability (CISPA) and Stanford University have founded a joint program for scientific collaboration.

The CISPA-Stanford Center is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and aims at promoting the education of excellent young scientists in the area of Cybersecurity preparing them for leadership positions in research and industry, in order to tackle today’s challenges in IT-Security. Its Junior Research Group Program will start in 2017.

“The increasing digitalization and interconnectedness of our daily life lead to enormous challenges in IT security. We need excellent researchers in this area, who can promote both research and industry”, says Michael Backes, director of CISPA and professor of IT Security and Cryptography at Saarland University. Together with John Mitchell, Professor of Computer Science and currently the vice-provost of Stanford University, he will be heading the new program.

The new qualification program at CISPA will, thus, address young scientists’ specific career needs in the area of cybersecurity. “Selected excellent junior scientists will be given the opportunity to do research at CISPA for two years, before spending another two years at Stanford University as a guest professor of Cybersecurity”, Backes explains. Finally, they will return to CISPA as research group leaders being well prepared to apply to German faculty positions or research group leader positions in industry.

On Thursday, 27 October 2016, Prof. Persis S. Drell, Dean of Stanford University, and Prof. Michael Backes, Director of CISPA and Professor at Saarland University, have signed the Memorandum of Understanding at Stanford University in the presence of a BMBF delegation, thus officially inaugurating the new Center.

The CISPA-Stanford Center is now seeking applicants for Phase P.
